World War 2

The Volunteers

Without the promise of volunteers this ship would have gone to the breaker's yard and a chance to preserve a vital part of Australia's heritage would have been lost. Today as in 1973 volunteers are essential to the life of the ship. Since the handing over of HMAS Castlemaine to The Maritime Trust of Australia the restoration, and development of the maritime museum has been self funded. The restoration of the ship itself and establishment of the maritime museum has continued unabated for twenty-five years. It is testament to the hard work of interested people who have volunteered their time and talents to bring the vessel and museum to the condition it is today. We still require people (with or without specific skills) to maintain, preserve and further the project. Broadly we need volunteers with trade skills to work on Tuesdays and quartermasters and guides on Saturdays and Sundays when the ship is open to the public. Being one of the volunteer crew on Castlemaine is not dull-there are a lot of laughs! If you are interested to help or would like to know more about the project visit the ship and talk to one of the volunteers, phone the ship on (03) 9397 2363 weekends or phone (03) 9853 0823 before 10.00 am weekdays, or email us via this website It is a very rewarding task.
